Mairi’s practice-led research has broken away from traditional aspect ratio limitations to explore immersive projections in the context of the commons, an ancient concept that brings people together in a shared space.

In 2015, her video installation Common Ground was invited to Resilient Places / Resilient: Elders Voices Summit at Tsawout Reserve, Vancouver Island ‘in recognition of [her] work with indigenous-settler relations and the commonalities between Indigenous Peoples in Aotearoa and Scotland’.

In addition to lecturing in Digital Design at AUT where she is part of the VR Lab research cluster, she is currently extending her research by investigating how an urban commons might be established using Virtual Reality, 360° image capture, photogrammetry in her work with new immigrants that will form the basis for her PhD thesis common / room (University of Auckland).
